Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is HTH™ Algae Guard 10, and when should I use it?

Use HTH™ Algae Guard 10 as a weekly preventive treatment when your pool is already clear and chemically balanced to help stop green algae before it starts.

  • What is the difference between HTH™ Algae Guard 10, HTH™ Algae Guard Advanced, and HTH™ Algae Guard+ Ultra?

HTH™ Algae Guard 10 provides weekly green algae prevention for clear, balanced pools. HTH™ Algae Guard Advanced provides weekly protection against green, mustard, and black algae. HTH™ Algae Guard+ Ultra protects against all three algae types for up to 30 days. Choose the product that best matches your pool maintenance needs.

  • How do I use HTH™ Algae Guard 10 in my pool?

Chlorine above 5 ppm can deactivate algaecide, so wait 24 hours after shocking and confirm chlorine has returned to 1–4 ppm. Then add the recommended dose of HTH™ Algae Guard 10 to the pool water with the pump running, distributing it around the pool's edge.

  • Can HTH™ Algae Guard 10 be used in a saltwater pool?

Yes. HTH™ Algae Guard 10 is compatible with saltwater, vinyl liner, and all standard pool types. Saltwater pools are not immune to algae—the chlorine generator can struggle during heat waves or periods of heavy pool use. A weekly algaecide treatment is a smart addition to any saltwater pool maintenance routine.

  • How often should I add algaecide to my pool?

For maintenance, add algaecide once a week during the swim season. Increase the frequency during stretches of hot weather, heavy rain, or periods of heavy pool use—all conditions that stress your chlorine and increase the risk of algae. Consistent weekly dosing is easier and more cost-effective than treating an active algae bloom.

  • Will HTH™ Algae Guard 10 clear an already-green pool?

HTH™ Algae Guard 10 is formulated for prevention and light maintenance—it is not strong enough to clear an existing algae bloom on its own. For an existing algae bloom, shock the pool with 2–3 lbs of shock per 10,000 gallons, brush all surfaces, and run the filter continuously. Once chlorine levels return to 1–4 ppm, add algaecide. For severe algae blooms, step up to HTH™ Algae Guard+ Ultra or HTH™ Green to Blue Advanced.

  • Does algaecide affect pH or chlorine levels?

HTH™ Algae Guard 10 has minimal effect on pH when used as directed, though some algaecides may cause temporary foaming. Test pool water before and after use. Chlorine above 5 ppm can deactivate algaecide, so wait for levels to return to normal.
