How to Use

How to Use

Why You Should Use This Product: This liquid chlorine is an effective 2‑in‑1 sanitizer that kills bacteria and algae and can also be used as a shock treatment. It is easy to use and will not overstabilize pool water.

Before Use: This product degrades with age. Test chlorine levels regularly using an HTH Pool Care Test Kit or Test Strips and increase dosage as needed.

Always adjust total alkalinity before adjusting pH levels.

Application Instructions

Add the recommended dosage of this product directly to the pool in the evening to minimize chlorine loss from sunlight. With the pump running, slowly pour this product close to the surface of the water, preferably near a return inlet.

Test free available chlorine residual using a reliable test kit. Do not enter the pool until the free available chlorine level is 1–4 ppm.

Routine Chlorination

To maintain the pool, add this product according to the directions below. Frequency of addition will depend on temperature and number of swimmers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is HTH™ Liquid Chlorine used for?

HTH™ Liquid Chlorine is a fast-acting sanitizer used to quickly raise chlorine levels, shock pools, and maintain day-to-day sanitation. It starts working immediately.

  • When should I use liquid chlorine instead of chlorine tablets?

Use liquid chlorine when you need a quick chlorine boost, including after heavy rain, after a pool party, at the first sign of algae, or for shock treatments. Tablets are better for slow, steady day-to-day maintenance.

  • How do I add liquid chlorine to my pool?

Pour liquid chlorine slowly around the edge of the pool near the return jets, with the pump running, preferably after sunset to reduce chlorine loss from sunlight. Allow 4–6 hours of circulation before retesting chlorine levels.

  • Does liquid chlorine contain stabilizer?

No. Liquid chlorine does not contain cyanuric acid (CYA), so it will not raise CYA levels. This is an advantage when CYA is already high, but it also means liquid chlorine loses strength quickly in direct sunlight when there is not enough stabilizer in the pool water.

  • How should I store HTH™ Liquid Chlorine safely?

Store HTH™ Liquid Chlorine in a cool, shaded, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat. High temperatures cause the chlorine to lose strength more quickly and can cause the container to bulge or leak. Keep it in the original sealed container away from other chemicals, especially acids, which can react violently with liquid chlorine. HTH™ Liquid Chlorine has a shelf life of approximately 3–6 months under ideal conditions; check its strength before use.

  • How much liquid chlorine do I need to shock a pool?

To shock a pool using liquid chlorine that contains 10–12.5% sodium hypochlorite, use approximately 1 gallon per 10,000 gallons to raise free chlorine by roughly 5–7 ppm. For severe algae or very green pool water, use 2 gallons per 10,000 gallons. Add it in the evening near the return jets with the pump running. Retest after 8 hours of circulation.
